Have you ever wondered what makes the Niagara Escarpment a geological and ecological wonder? Did you know that the entire escarpment zone in Canada has been permanently protected as a World Biosphere Reserve for its distinctly unique characteristics?

People interested in finding out more about this ecological jewel are invited to learn more about the efforts of the Western New York Land Conservancy to protect and inventory the escarpment zone in Niagara County this year. The project is known as the Niagara Escarpment Legacy Project.

A presentation will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 24, in the Nature Center at Bond Lake Park located at 2353 Lower Mountain Road in Ransomville.

Kathleen McCormick, stewardship director for the Western New York Land Conservancy, will share information about some properties that have already been protected along the escarpment and explain how this is done.

Projects along the escarpment can also be accomplished on a smaller scale. For example, it was through the collaboration of WNY Land Conservancy, the Niagara County Parks Department and the Bond Lake Park Committee that led to the restoration of the oak savannah in the park.

In addition, there will be an overview of the comprehensive inventory that will be done along the escarpment in Niagara County, funded by the Niagara Greenway Commission. People who live on the escarpment or nearby are encouraged to attend this meeting to find out more about the ongoing efforts of the Land Conservancy to maintain and preserve this treasured natural resource. Both questions and input are welcome.

This is a free event sponsored by the Bond Lake Environmental and Beautification Committee.
