Lewiston Public Library February programs, events and activities

The Lewiston Public Library, 305 S. Eighth St., announces the following programs, events and activities for February.

•The AARP Taxaide Service is available at the Lewiston Public Library beginning in February. Appointments are available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12:30 until 3:30 p.m. Sign up at the library or call 716-754-4720 to schedule an appointment.

Clubs and More

•The Lewiston Library board of trustees will meet on Monday, Feb. 4, at 5 p.m.

•The Lewiston Book Club will hold its next meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 5, at 1:30 p.m. For further information, contact Anita Mallimo at 716-754-7714.

•The Lewiston Writers' Group will meet on Monday, Feb. 11; Tuesday, Feb. 19; and Monday, Feb. 25, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Lewiston Library. For more information, visit www.lewistonwritersgroup.com.

•The Dead Beats Society will meet on Monday, Feb. 11, at 6 p.m.

•The Friends of the Library will meet on Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 6 p.m.

Story Times

•Alphabet Soup, a story time for ages 3 to 5, meets on Mondays, Feb. 4, 11 and 25, at 10:30 a.m.

•Lewiston Lapsit, a story time for children ages birth to 23 months old, meets Wednesdays, Feb. 6, 13 and 27, at 10 a.m.

•Toddler Time, featuring music, finger play, stories, and crafts for ages 2 and 3 years old, meets Tuesdays, Feb. 5, 12 and 26, at 10:30 a.m.

•Story Time with Mrs. Leardini, featuring music, stories and crafts for all ages, meets Thursdays, Feb. 7, 14 and 28, at 10:30 a.m.

•Tail Waggin' Tutors continues. If your child is interested in reading to certified therapy dogs, see Ann Siejka in the children's room for further information. It is a great way to build confidence, oral reading skills and ability. It is also great practice for those youngsters just beginning to learn their sight words.

Winter Break Activities

•"Reptiles with CroZoo," a program on crocodilians, frogs, lizards, salamanders, snakes, tortoises and turtles, will be held on Tuesday, Feb. 19, at 6 p.m. Learn where reptiles live, what they do and how they do it.

•"Thomas the Tank Engine" is an hour-long program of stories, songs, crafts and time to play on a wooden track. This program is for children age 4-plus, and is limited to 40 participants. Call for details.

•Buggy Friends with the Buffalo Museum of Science, a hands-on program for children in grades pre-K through fifth, will be offered in two sessions, at 3:30 and 4 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 21. Sessions are limited to 30 participants.

•Snowshoeing with staffers from the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation will be offered on Friday, Feb. 22, at 3 p.m. State Parks will hold a brief discussion on where snowshoes originated, different types of snowshoes, and how to snowshoe. Participants will then go outside and snowshoe in Bug Park. Registration is required to ensure enough snowshoes for everyone. (This program is dependent on having at least 4 inches of snow on the ground.)

Library hours: Monday-Tuesday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Wednesday-Thursday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday, noon to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The library will be closed on Monday, Feb. 18, in observance of Presidents Day.
