After a lengthy illness, Ernest "Ernie" Murdoch, 73, of Lewiston passed away on Friday, Jan. 11, 2013, in Mount St. Mary's Hospital.

Murdoch was born Nov. 11, 1939, in Niagara Falls, the son of the late Robert and Gladys (Carpenter) Murdoch. He was a lifelong resident of Lewiston, and served in the U.S. Army in 1957-58. On May 28, 1960, he married Janine (VandenBosch) Murdoch.

The Village of Lewiston Department of Public Works employed Murdoch for 40 years. He retired in 1999 as superintendent. He was also the former owner of the Lewiston Trenching Company. Murdoch was instrumental in the restoration of Lewiston Landing and, upon his retirement date, it was renamed "Murdoch Landing."

He was a communicant of St. Peter's R.C. Church in Lewiston. He was a charter member, governor and trustee of Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 584 in Lewiston, and a member of the American Legion Post No. 1083 in Lewiston, the 3-F Conservation Club and the Association of Retired Superintendents of New York State.

Murdoch was an avid hunter and fisherman. He loved spending time with his family and grandchildren, especially at his Westfield camp. In spite of his lengthy illness, he never lost his sense of humor.

Ernie is survived by wife, Janine; a daughter, Theresa M. Murdoch (Patrick Thompson), and a son, Michael Murdoch (Eliza Newman) both of Lewiston; his grandchildren: Ryan, Michael and Tyler Rueter, and Brooke and Cole Murdoch; a sister, Mary (Lester) Losell of Niagara Falls; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by three sisters: Kathy Woodruff, Margaret Lebans and Eva Alexander; and by two brothers: Robert and William Murdoch.

Services took place Sunday and Monday at Hardison Funeral Home, Lewiston, and a Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated on Tuesday in St. Peter's R.C. Church, with the Rev. Michael Zuffoletto officiating. Burial is in the Dickersonville Cemetery, Lewiston.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Caring Voice Coalition Inc., 8249 Meadowbridge Road, Mechanicsville, VA 23116.
