Sheriff James R. Voutour has announced the Sheriff's Community Police Academy will be held Feb. 28 and every Thursday through May 30 at no cost.

Instruction starts at 6 p.m. at the Niagara County Public Safety Building, 5574 Niagara St. Extension, Lockport, and it generally lasts three to four hours.

Applications can be obtained at www.niagarasheriff.com. For questions or to have an application mailed, contact Capt. Michael Dunn at 716-438-3331 or Deputy Pat Williams at 716-523-0098.

Applicants will be notified by mail when accepted into the program. Applicants must be at least 20 years of age, reside or work within Niagara County and have no prior felony convictions or outstanding warrants.

The goal of the Sheriff's Community Police Academy is to provide county residents with a working knowledge and background of the Niagara County Sheriff's Office. Topics, such as firearms training simulator, reality-based training and the emergency vehicle operator course are just a short list of the many facets of the program.
