Castellani Art Museum announces spring 2013 schedule of exhibitions, workshops and events

The Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University has announced its schedule for spring. All programs take place at the art museum located on the Niagara University campus.

New Exhibitions

•Jan. 20-May 26: "A Good Ride: Arts and Traditions of the Attica Rodeo." Opening reception: Sunday, Feb. 24.

•Feb. 10-June 30: "Picasso at the Lapin Agile" (in conjunction with Niagara University Reader's Theatre production).

•March 3-April 21: "Carol Carreno: Fragments of a Beautiful Journey in Broken Glass." Opening reception: Sunday, March 3, 2 until 4 p.m.

•March 10-July 28: "Chromatic Dynamism: Movement Through Color."

•March 17-July 21: "Western New York Collects: Josh Iguchi." Opening reception: Sunday, March 17, 2 until 4 p.m.

•May 5-Aug. 25: "TopSpin Series: Mary Johnson." Opening reception: Sunday, May 5, 2 until 4 p.m.

Continuing Exhibitions

  • "The Picturesque and War: Visual and Literary Aspects of 19th Century Niagara Tourism," through Feb. 24
  • "Four Decades of Abstraction," through Sept. 28, 2014
  • "Freedom Crossing: The Underground Railroad in Greater Niagara," ongoing

Lectures, Workshops and Community Programs

'Meet Me at the CAM'

These educational art history programs run from 10 a.m. until noon and feature films, guest speakers and facilitated discussions. Admission is free, but Castellani Art Museum membership is required to attend. Membership signup is available at the registration desk, or applications may be downloaded at http://www.castellaniartmuseum.org/membership.

'Sold to the boys in the white T-shirts! Stories of the Attica Rodeo'

Speaker: Karen Canning, traditional arts program director of Genesee, Orleans, Livingston and Wyoming County Arts Councils.

  • Thursday, Feb. 28 

Karen Canning will introduce guests to the founders, families, cowboys, entertainers and fans who have contributed to the Attica Rodeo's vibrant tradition for more than 50 years. Their stories and images of rodeo life both in the arena and beyond will give insight into the history, skills, talents and hard work that comprise the rich and layered tradition of Attica and the American rodeo.

'Georgia O'Keeffe: New York to New Mexico'

Speaker: Nancy Knechtel, art history professor at Niagara University and NCCC

  • Friday, March 15 

This illustrated lecture will discuss Georgia O'Keeffe's life in New York and in New Mexico. Nancy Knechtel, who teaches art history at Niagara County Community College and Niagara University, received a grant from the National Endowment of the Humanities last summer to study at O'Keeffe's studios at Ghost Ranch and Abiquiu and the O'Keeffe archives in Santa Fe, N.M.

'The Art of the Vatican'

Speaker: Dr. Bonnie Gordon Flickinger, Rainbow Lectures

  • Thursday, April 4 

Dr. Bonnie Flickinger was a member of the special delegation invited to the Sistine Chapel for a service led by the Archbishop of Canterbury and Pope Paul VI, the first service in the Vatican jointly celebrated by Roman Catholic and Protestant leaders. She also attended a special preview of "The Vatican Collection, The Papacy and Art" with the American Academy in Rome. This slide lecture will provide a one-of-a kind opportunity to view some of this beautiful collection.

Folk Arts Programs: 'A Night of Country Line and Couples Dancing'

  • Friday, April 26, from 7 to 11 p.m.

An event held in conjunction with the exhibition "A Good Ride: Arts and Traditions of the Attica Rodeo." General admission is $5. The event is free for Castellani Art Museum members.

Art Express Family Workshops

Hop aboard the Art Express. The theme-based journey begins with a tour of artworks in the gallery, a story, and concludes with hands-on art activities in the classroom. All workshops begin at 2 p.m. The cost is $2 per person for museum members, and $3 for non-members. To register, call 716-286-8367.
