Lewiston Public Library January programs, events and activities

The Lewiston Public Library, 305 S. Eighth St., in the Village of Lewiston, announces the following programs, events and activities for the month of January 2013.

•A special program, " 'Real' Meditation Practice with Burt Fatta," will be offered Wednesdays, Jan. 16 and 23, at 2 p.m. The program, which will also include the bell form of meditation, will explain basic meditation technique, as well as the physical and mental benefits of meditation. The program is free and open to the public.

Clubs and More

•The Lewiston Public Library board of trustees meets on Monday, Jan. 7, at 5 p.m.

•The Lewiston Book Club will meet on Tuesday, Jan. 8, at 1:30 p.m. For further information, contact Anita Mallimo at 716-754-7714.

•Friends of the Library will meet Tuesday, Jan. 8, at 6 p.m.

•The Lewiston Writers' Group will meet on Mondays, Jan. 14 and 28, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Lewiston Library. For more information, visit www.lewistonwritersgroup.com.

•The Dead Beats Society will meet on Monday, Jan. 14, at 6 p.m.

•A genealogy class, "Searching Our Ancestors Using Military Records," with Jim Lawson, will be offered on Tuesday, Jan. 15, at 6 p.m. Lawson is a FamilySearch Center librarian and expert in military records. His presentation includes an in-depth look into locating and researching various American military records for genealogical purposes. There will also be a presentation by the Daughters of the American Revolution. This presentation will include details about membership as well as research methods for filling out the application. The program is open to the public.

•Personal instructional genealogy appointments may be made on Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Call the library, 716-754-4720, to arrange an appointment or email Michelle Kratts at [email protected].

•The Knitting Club meets every Friday from 1 to 3 p.m. No registration is required and knitters of all skill levels are welcome. For more information, contact Ellen Comerford at 716-754-4144.

Story Times

The library announces that, beginning Jan. 1, there will be some changes to its story times.

•Alphabet Soup, a story time for ages 3 to 5, will have its dates and times announced on the library website, Facebook page, and monthly calendar before Dec. 31.

•Lewiston Lapsit story time, for children ages birth to 23 months old, will be held Wednesdays at 10 a.m.

•Toddler Time, featuring music, finger play, stories, and crafts for ages 2 to 3 years old, will announce its dates and times on the library website, Facebook page, and monthly calendar before Dec. 31.

•Story Time with Mrs. Leardini, featuring music, stories, and crafts for all ages, meets Thursdays at 10:30 a.m.

•Tail Waggin' Tutors, a great way for children to build confidence, oral reading skills and ability, will again be offered at the library. If your child is interested in reading to certified therapy dogs, see Ann Siejka in the children's room for further information.

•Amelia Bedelia's 50th Birthday Party will be celebrated at the library on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 6 p.m. Featured will be games, crafts, stories and cake. Dress up like Amelia or her friends and join the fun.

The library will be closed on Tuesday, Jan. 1, for New Year's Day, and Monday, Jan. 21, in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Library hours: Monday-Tuesday 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Wednesday-Thursday 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Friday, noon to 5 p.m.; and Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
