NCCC's professional development sessions open to the public

The Niagara County Community College professional development committee will hold professional development days for faculty and staff at the Sanborn campus of NCCC from Jan. 4-9, 2013.

On Wednesday, Jan. 9, three sessions will be open to the public to attend:

'Celebrating 50 Years at NCCC'

  • 9-10 a.m.
  • Location: B114 (NCCC Sanborn campus)

Karen Ferington, archives librarian at the NCCC Henrietta G. Lewis Library, will discuss the college's rich history. Can you name some famous people who have been featured speakers on campus? What are some interesting events that have taken place at NCCC? What was it like being a student there in the early days? Join is as they explore the treasures that can be found in the NCCC archives with a trivia game, photos and more.

'NCCC Digressions'

  • 10:30-11:30 a.m.
  • Location: B114 (NCCC Sanborn campus)

E.R. Baxter III, Niagara County Community College professor emeritus of English, will read from his new book, "Niagara Digressions," and sign copies afterward. He will also discuss his soon-to-be released book "Niagara Lost and Found: New and Selected Poems."

Baxter grew up in Niagara County, attended NCCC as a student, and has been a fellow of a New York State Creative Service Award for fiction and a recipient of a Just Buffalo Award for Fiction. His books include "Looking for Niagara" and the chapbooks "And Other Poems"; "A Good War"; "Hunger"; and "What I Want." Additional work has appeared in the Albany Review, Beloit Poetry Journal, Hartford Courant, New Madrid, Slipstream, Stone Canoe, UnderĀ­beat Journal #2, and in Wormwood Review. Baxter is also a founding member of Niagara Heritage Partnership.

'Niagara County Community College: The Early Years'

  • 11:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m.
  • Location: B114 (NCCC Sanborn campus)

Niagara County Community College Professor Emeritus Graham Millar will give a brief history of NCCC from the founding and early days of the college through 1973 and shortly thereafter. The college "opened for business" in the fall of 1963, and Millar joined its ranks soon after, beginning his tenure in 1965.

As was his teaching style, Millar will deliver an interactive lecture with much room for questions and discussion. Join in for an informative and personal look back into NCCC's history.
