The referendum for the Grand Island School District's proposed $6,377,000 transportation facility will go to public vote on Tuesday, Dec. 18, from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Grand Island High School.

Grand Island residents will not see an impact on their taxes because of the proposed construction as 19.4 percent of the construction costs will come from capital reserve funds and from borrowed monies. New York State building aid will cover 80.6 percent of the cost.

The new 16,000-square-foot "bus garage" will occupy space adjacent to the current transportation facility behind Charlotte Sidway School on Baseline Road. Construction should begin early in 2014. The current bus garage will be converted into a buildings and grounds facility, relocating staff and equipment from Eco Island on Staley Road to this centralized location on Baseline Road. The building at Eco Island will be used for the district's nature preserve classroom.

The new building will include:

•Office space

•Bathrooms and lockers for staff

•Parts storage

•Expanded parking for buses and staff cars

•Off street parking for parent cars (adjacent to the Sidway athletic fields)

•A loop road which will move buses along back of the athletic fields to exit onto Baseline on the north side of the property.

More details regarding the proposed new transportation facility may be viewed on the district website: www.k12.ginet.org, along with an architectural rendering of the building and site plan.

Administrators and the Board of Education encourage the public to vote on this project on Dec. 18. Voters must show ID, be a U.S. citizen of at least 18 years of age and a district resident for at least 30 days.
