Cornerstone Community Federal Credit Union is offering local high school seniors entering college a chance to win a scholarship to help finance their education.

Cornerstone CFCU is participating in the Credit Union Association of New York's statewide credit union scholarship program and awarding scholarships to the top 10 applicants from Cornerstone CFCU.

To be eligible for a scholarship, each student must be a graduating high school senior attending college for the first time in the fall of 2013, and a member of Cornerstone CFCU.

Students will compete against other credit union members from across the state. Applicants will be judged based upon their academic achievements, extracurricular activities, community service activities, and the quality of a written essay.

The scholarship will offer Cornerstone members the chance to win scholarships to either a two- or four-year accredited educational institution. Last year, the Credit Union Association of New York awarded $13,00 in scholarships through this program. In addition, Cornerstone awarded $3,850 and the Niagara Chapter of the CUANY awarded $1,500.

Applications for the scholarship must be completed and returned to Cornerstone by Jan. 18, 2013.

Applications are available on the Cornerstone website and at branch locations: Lockport, 6485 S. Transit Road and 55 Stevens St.; 5 State St., Middleport; and 107 Main St., North Tonawanda.
