'Upstairs/Downstairs' at Old Fort Niagara

The Youngstown Garden Club is creating a new look at Old Fort Niagara this season - in fact, two looks.

An "Upstairs/Downstairs" theme will feature sparkling silver and fleur de lis in the commandant's rooms and officers quarters. "Downstairs" in the kitchen and soldiers barracks, decorations will be rustic with woodland elements reflecting the country life of the early settlers.

Every year, Youngstown Garden Club members decorate the French Castle with fresh greens for the holidays. Mantles are draped with garland. Pinecones and dried flowers nestle into boughs along the windowsills.

In 2007, the club was designated overall winner of the National Garden Club Historical Preservation Award for its work at Old Fort Niagara.

The season begins with the annual members social on Dec. 9 and carries thru Jan. 6, 2013. Candlelight tours during the holidays take visitors through simulated winter quarters with re-enactors bringing history to life.
