Members of the Interact Club of Grand Island High School planted bulbs in the library courtyard last week as part of their ongoing efforts in volunteerism.

Interact Club, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Grand Island, conducted the planting of 53 bulbs on Oct. 26 under the supervision of Rotarian Angelo Grande, the club's liaison with Grand Island Rotary.

"We're just trying to give something back, trying to make the school a nicer place and add something that everyone can enjoy," said Christopher Komin, Interact co-president. He said English classes use the courtyard for independent reading.

Allysa Bush, vice president of Interact, said joining a service club in the school is important "because you can get more involved with the school, and it's more fun."

"It is hard work, but it's fun," Bush said of the bulb planting.

Co-President Orendael Miller said the members of Interact choose their own projects, and that the volunteer effort is one of many planned for this school year by Interact. Komin said that in November the club will design seasonal holiday placemats with the children at Kaegebein and Huth Road elementary school in preparation for delivery to retirement homes.

"I like helping out with the community and volunteering, as well as helping people," Kourtney Hoppel, club secretary, said. Hoppel said Interact filled trick-or-treat bags for delivery to the group homes on the Island.

"Last year, for the first year, we did a flag football tournament," Komin added. "It was definitely a lot of fun. We got the word out. A lot of people were talking about it, and it was good. We helped out the Neighbors Foundation a little bit and made it a day event. It was a great time." The event provided about $400 to the foundation, he added.

Grande said the flag football tournament will be "the signature event for Interact, similar to the Lobsterfest is for Rotary." He credited Linda Tufillaro of the town Recreation Department and GIHS Principal Sandy Anzalone for their support in helping the tournament get off the ground in its first year.
