The judge's tallies are in and the winner of the 2012 Niagara River Region Scarecrow Display is The Village Bake Shoppe with "Death By Chocolate." Mike and Lindsay Fiore's Village of Lewiston display won the overall "Best in Show" award. Additional winners in each community include: Lewiston Music of Lewiston with "Clyde"; Anchor Spirits of Youngstown with "The Haunted Grog Shop of 1812"; and the Sanborn Area Historical Society in Sanborn with "The Haunted Hay Ride."

The display is hosted by the Niagara River Region Chamber of Commerce. The NRRCC used students from Niagara University as judges this year.

"The competition was so close this year, and we had more creative displays this year than ever before! Every point counted in this competition. We actually had a few tied scores and had to send the judges back out to break the tie," said Chamber of Commerce President Jennifer Pauly.

The Fiores, owners of the Village Bake Shoppe, located at 417 Center St., give the NRRCC the inside scoop on how their design edged out the rest.

How did you come up with the concept? We are all about Halloween at the Bake Shoppe! We wanted a display, which would be associated with the shop, but also getting a little gruesome to get into the Halloween spirit. As we were bouncing ideas off each other, one of our bakers said "Hey! Why don't we do 'Death by Chocolate?" It was perfect! So we came up with the concept of chocolate chip cookies attacking a red velvet wedding cake. It turned out better than we anticipated.

What materials did you use? We used Styrofoam rounds for the cakes and cookies. We also wanted them to be in costume, so we dressed the cake and cookies up in pirate suits. It's a comical, but very Halloween-appropriate, display. We used spray paint and hand-painted the faces of each cookie and cake.

How long did it take you to plan and make your display? We worked on the display for a week. Our manager, Paula, and baker, Ashley, really spent a lot of time painting and building the display. It took us two days to set up, because it's more of a scene then a single scarecrow.

What are your customers' opinions/comments on your display? Children love the cookies, and the adults like it, too. I've seen people taking pictures of their kids with the cookies. We are glad people are enjoying it.

Besides your own display, did you have a favorite that you noticed? It seems everyone really got in the Halloween spirit this year. We definitely enjoyed Piper's Village Inn's king and queen display "One Knight Stand" - that was very creative.
