Sandy was a miss in the towns

Aside from a lot of rain and some branches down, the Town of Niagara and Wheatfield were relatively unscathed by Hurricane Sandy.

The supervisors of the two towns issued the following statements:

In Wheatfield, Supervisor Bob Cliffe said:

"Thank goodness, most of Niagara County and Wheatfield dodged the worst that Hurricane Sandy could have given us. There were a couple of localized power outages, but not the major problems, which we saw in the New York City and New Jersey areas.

"My thanks to our sewer and highway crews who were out helping others during the worst of the storm: job well done.

"The chipper will be out as soon as we can get it out to start removing the numerous branches knocked down by this storm. It is not likely that we'll be able to get to every pile this week. Please be patient and the highway crews will get to you.

"In the meantime, I suggest you take action now to handle any emergencies which may yet come this fall or winter. Have on hand enough food and water for your whole family, a good flashlight and extra batteries for each person, candles with dry matches, even extra diapers for your child. No matter what comes your way, you'll be prepared."

In Town of Niagara, Supervisor Steve Richards said:

"We were very fortunate to escape the full fury of Hurricane Sandy and my prayers and thoughts are with the ones on the East Coast who weren't as lucky as we were.

"With the advance warning given on the potential path of the storm, the town took many steps to be one step ahead of it. Police Chief James Suitor and his police officers, Highway Superintendent Robert Herman and his crew and Water/Sewer Superintendent Edward Adamczyk and his crew are all to be commended on a job well done. Town Clerk Sylvia Virtuoso and her office, Roberta and Beverly in the water and sewer department offices, did a great job in fielding questions and alerting the crews of any problems arising from the storm. In fact, each and every employee is to be commended; they all did a fantastic job.

"As we all know, living in Western New York, you just never know what Mother Nature will throw your way, and being properly prepared is half the battle."
