Last call for Island homeowners to get their tree trimmings/brush out to the curb.

Once the Highway Department trucks are converted to snow removal, there will be no more branch pick up until the spring.

The winter parking ban goes into effect Nov. 1. From then until April 1, there is no parking on roads between the hours of 2 and 6 a.m. regardless of amount of snowfall.

Household garbage pickup dates are affected by six holidays - Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, Memorial Day, July 4th, and Labor Day. On each of these days, trash pickup is postponed by 24 hours; Friday pickup occurs on Saturday. Garbage should be placed out at the curb no more than 24 hours in advance of pickup.

Electronic waste must be delivered to the Highway Department at 1820 Whitehaven Road. This includes televisions, computers, stereo equipment, etc. State law mandates the community trash haulers cannot take these items. See the GI Town website www.gigov.com for more details.

Highway right-of-way

Every road has a right-of-way that includes the paved road surface and clear land on each side. The right-of-way is reserved for the purposes of maintenance of existing utilities and to allow roadside clear zones. Any objects in the right-of-way, above or below ground, can be placed there by permit only.

It is generally accepted and encouraged for homeowners to maintain the right-of-way adjacent to their property. Not acceptable is placing, rocks, stakes, logs and other objects that may be considered "deadly fixed objects" in the right-of-way.
