Students at Grand Island High School will raise money for local veterans with the first-ever Vikings for Vets 5-kilometer event.

The Grand Island High School Student Council and Student Advisory Council have organized the 5K, with proceeds to benefit WNY Heroes Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting veterans and troops, including the disabled.

Kelly Ruminski, president of Student Council at Grand Island High School, said the council considers veterans a vital group to support.

"We just thinks it's important. These veterans have given and sacrificed their lives, their abilities, to serve us," she said.

The race will take place the day before Veterans Day, Saturday, Nov. 10, at Veterans Park, 1717 Bedell Road, beginning at 9 a.m., rain or shine. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m.

Non-runners can support the effort as well, Ruminski said.

"Even if people aren't running, they can walk it or just donate money," Ruminski said, adding that the council is also looking for race sponsors.

Student Council at the school is generating greater involvement in with community with charitable works and volunteerism.

"We are the voice of the school," Ruminski said, noting that Student Council is in charge of events such as the Homecoming Dance and Spirit Week, and raising money for different organizations through fundraisers such as last year's Christmas tree sale. The race is one of many fundraisers the council will conduct during the school year, but this event is not restricted to students and staff in the district.

"This is for everyone, the whole community," Ruminski noted.

Entry forms can be found at the Grand Island Recreation Department at the Nike Base on Whitehaven Road, at Grand Island Memorial Library and at Grand Island High School.
