Beautification year proclaimed by Regan

County Executive Edward V. Regan Monday signed a proclamation designating November 1972-November 1973 as Beautification Year in Erie County.

The proclamation was written to encourage area citizens to accept community responsibility by taking a personal part in the Buffalo Area Chamber of Commerce drive to make Erie County the cleanest and most beautiful county in the nation. ...

In a statement to press and television, the county executive said,

"Erie County, located in the heart of the world-famous Niagara Region and the gateway to Canada, has much to offer - but our image, as an attractive, growing area should be improved.

"We possess scenic attributes, a huge industrial complex, excellent recreational activities, and spectator sports that are second to none. We are building a new stadium that is sure to become one of the best in the land.

"Will our stadium visitors want to come back and visit us again? Will we attract new prosperous business ventures and new residents? Will we become know as a clean and beautiful area? The answers to these questions are up to all of us ... ."

Isle bus service to begin soon

Legislator Charles M. Swanick Thursday announced that shuttle bus service for Grand Island "is on its way!" He said Brad Masters of Bradson Charter Service, operator of the proposed shuttle bus service, notified him this week that a tentative start-up date has been scheduled for the middle on November.

Route information and operating times have yet to be established ... .

Another landmark lost to fire

Smoke in the vicinity of Beaver Island was the first telephoned alarm called into the fire company about 7 a.m. yesterday morning, sending men and equipment to the blaze that totally destroyed the casino in the park. Additional help was quickly obtained from Sheridan Fire Company on the mainland and five other off-Island companies, but the fully involved facility was beyond saving.

Damage to the building, constructed in the 1930s, shortly after the bridges opened to traffic, was estimated at $3 million. Cause of the fire is under investigation. ...

Peace Bridge public meeting set for Nov. 14

The Peace Bridge expansion Project is considering a total of five alternatives to the present location which impact the Town of Grand Island.

Two of those alternatives actually cross Grand Island, while the remaining three cross the Niagara River in the vicinity of Strawberry Island. While these are not the preferred sites, all five remain as possibilities.

If ultimately selected, each of these sites present numerous significant, inescapable and extremely negative impacts for this community and our environment.

A representative of the project will conduct a public information meeting ... Nov. 14 in the courtroom at Grand Island Town Hall.
