At its meeting in Town Hall on Monday, the Grand Island Town Board urged its residents to support a local organization celebrating a milestone this year.

The board issued a proclamation to Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty, commonly called CROP, which raises money for international hunger relief, as well as local food pantries. Grand Island residents can help stop hunger in their community and around the world by joining the 25th annual CROP Walk on Grand Island at 1 p.m. in Beaver Island State Park on Sunday, Oct. 14, at the picnic shelter adjacent to the marina.

The event has also been endorsed by the Grand Island Chamber of Commerce and the Grand Island Ministerium. The honorary chairperson is Robert W. Christmann, Grand Island superintendent of schools.

Twenty-five percent of donated funds remain on Grand Island where it is administered by the Neighbors Foundation and Trinity United Methodist Church. The remainder is used by Church World Service and other designated international agencies to reduce hunger and poverty throughout the world. According to CROP Walk Coordinator the Rev. Paul E. Robinson, even relatively affluent communities such as Grand Island have many people in need, and recent census data indicates that one out of every 25 Grand Islanders lives in poverty.

Additional information, including pledge envelopes, can be found at Key Bank, Creative Leather Concepts/Grand Island Ship Center-Fed X, deSignet, the Chamber of Commerce Office, Serene Gardens, Niagara Frontier Publications, Trinity United Methodist Church, St. Martin-in-the-Fields Episcopal Church and Island Presbyterian Church.

In making the proclamation, the Town Board "hereby encourages all residents to support CROP ... by walking or supporting someone else who will be walking."

The board thanked the Grand Island Ministerium "for sponsoring this worthwhile event."
