Event at Shea's is largest annual fundraiser for the organization

Literacy New York Buffalo-Niagara Inc., formerly Literacy Volunteers of Buffalo & Erie County and Literacy Volunteers of Niagara County, has announced that tickets are on sale for its third annual "Cocktails In Character" fundraiser. The event will be held on Thursday, Oct. 25, from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in the grand lobby at Shea's Performing Arts Center.

Guests are encouraged, but not required, to dress as their favorite literary character, and a judged costume contest will offer exciting prizes. DC Theatricks costume shop will provide a 10 percent discount on costume rentals or sales.

The event will offer guests the opportunity to sample food and drink from a number of local restaurants, breweries and wineries, and live performances from the Buffalo Gay Men's Chorus and Fleuron Rouge & The Bellydance Academy will take place throughout the evening. Countless raffle baskets and silent auction items, as in previous years, will also dazzle patrons.

Tickets are $35 presale and $40 on the day of the event. Visit www.cocktailsincharacter.com or call 716-876-8991 for additional information.

"Cocktails In Character" is the agency's largest fundraiser and benefits adult and children's literacy programming in Western New York. The event also serves as a formal recognition for the more than 300 volunteer tutors who work directly with adult students each year.

Literacy New York Buffalo-Niagara Inc. is the region's sole provider of free literacy services. Its mission is to open pathways to expanded opportunities for adult learners and school children by enhancing their literacy skills and nurturing their well-being. Its vision is to be an integral partner in the revitalization of this community. The agency achieves this through recruiting, training and supporting dedicated volunteers who work one-on-one with adults, as well as teachers who tutor children.

All are invited to participate in the fun and join in the fight against illiteracy. With the public's kind support, Literacy New York Buffalo-Niagara Inc. is able to further its vital mission and increase literacy services in Erie and Niagara counties.
