Castellani Art Museum announces fall 2012 schedule of exhibitions, workshops and events

The Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University has announced its schedule for fall 2012:

Current Exhibitions

•Through Dec. 2: Folk arts exhibition: "(Re-)Making Irish Lace"

•Through Jan. 27, 2013: "Western New York Collects: Arnold Mesches"

•Through Feb. 17, 2013: "TopSpin 10: The 10 Year TopSpin Retrospective"

•Through Feb. 24, 2013: "The Picturesque and War: Visual and Literary Aspects of 19th Century Niagara Tourism"

Continuing Exhibitions

•"Four Decades of Abstraction," through Sept. 28, 2014

•"Freedom Crossing: The Underground Railroad in Greater Niagara," ongoing

Special Events

•Castellani Art Museum 10th annual gala: Saturday, Oct. 13; cocktails at 6:30 p.m. and dinner at 7:30 p.m. A special evening is in store for guests at the Castellani Art Museum's annual fundraiser. Tickets are $135 per person or $160 per patron. Reservations must be received by Oct. 5. Proceeds benefit education and exhibition-related programs at the museum. Call 716-286-8201 for reservations.

•Museum Mixer: CAM's sixth annual "Holiday Bash": Friday, Dec. 14, from 5 to 8 p.m. Celebrate the holidays at the Castellani Art Museum with live music by Penelope, dancing, refreshments, a cash bar, basket raffle and door prize. Admission is free to museum members, and $10 for others.

Lectures, Workshops and Community Programs

The following programs are held in conjunction with the exhibition "The Picturesque and War: Visual and Literary Aspects of 19th Century Niagara Tourism":

•Oct. 21: Reading and Interpretation of the poem, "The Foresters" by Alexander Wilson, which describes a journey by foot from the lower Niagara River to the falls in the autumn of 1804. The guest speaker is Dr. Robert Giannetti, author and antiquarian bookseller, Niagara University adjunct professor and guest curator of "The Picturesque and War: Visual and Literary Aspects of 19th Century Tourism."

•Nov. 4: "Memories of War: Visiting Battle Grounds in the Early American Republic," a lecture and book signing with Dr. Chambers.

•Nov. 18: Reading and interpretation of the 19th century comic masterpiece: "The Tour of Dr. Syntax in Search of the Picturesque" by Giannetti.

Docent-led Public Tours

Thirty-minute tour includes overview of the museum's current exhibitions. Meet your docent at 2 p.m. at the reception desk. Reservations are not necessary. Admission is free, but donations welcome. Free docent-led tours are scheduled for 2 p.m. on the following dates:

Sunday, Nov. 11, and Sunday, Dec. 9

Art Express Family Workshops

Hop aboard the Art Express. The CAM's theme-based journey begins with a tour of artworks in the gallery and a story, and concludes with hands-on art activities in the classroom. All workshops begin at 2 p.m. The cost is $2 per person for museum members or $3 for non-members. To register, call 716-286-8367.

The Castellani Art Museum of Niagara University is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and Sundays from 1 until 5 p.m. Admission is free.
