The War of 1812 Encampment is critical to group tourism dollars

Over the past six years, Deborah Duerr, director of tourism sales at the Niagara Tourism & Convention Corp., has nominated a multitude of different events to the "American Bus Association's Top 100 Events in North America" program. Thanks to her efforts, the "War of 1812 Encampment - the Capture of Fort Niagara" was designated as one of the Top 100 for 2013.

ABA's "Top 100 Events in North America" list is one of the most sought-after lists by travel professionals, motorcoach operators and the general public. The NTCC recognizes this and, thanks to the diligent efforts of Duerr, this ranking makes the "War of 1812 Encampment" a can't-miss ticket, at a time when tourism dollars are important to the economy.

The "War of 1812 Encampment" was selected from hundreds of event nominations submitted by ABA members. Judges considered the event's broad appeal, its accessibility to motorcoaches and skill at handling large groups, among other relevant criteria. Duerr and the NTCC submitted the application in the spring.

"We are thrilled to receive this designation and express our sincere thanks to the Niagara Tourism and Convention Corporation for nominating us. Working together, we are attracting more group tour business to the region; a 21 percent increase in 2012 alone. This designation will build on that success and provide strong momentum as the War of 1812 bicentennial continues next year," said Robert Emerson, executive director at Old Fort Niagara.
