Fire and rescue demonstrations, fire safety education, blood pressure checks and fire truck rides will be among the activities offered to the public on Saturday, Oct. 6, when the Upper Mountain Volunteer Fire Co. holds its annual community open house.

The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the company grounds at 839 Moyer Road. Scheduled as part of national Fire Prevention Week, this year's theme will be "Have Two Ways Out!"

"The National Fire Protection Association has chosen this theme to encourage families everywhere to prioritize fire escape planning and practice," said Upper Mountain Chief Dan Leven. "Having a home fire escape plan prepares families to think fast and get out quickly when the smoke alarm sounds. 'Have Two Ways Out' emphasizes the importance designating a second exit for use if one exit is blocked by smoke."

Upper Mountain Volunteer Fire Co. provides fire protection, technical rescue and emergency medical services to residents and businesses in the Town of Lewiston. The company responded to 1,415 calls for service in 2011, making it the busiest all-volunteer fire/rescue company in Niagara County.

"Everybody who lives and works in Lewiston and the surrounding communities is invited to our open house," said Upper Mountain President Greg Sitek. "We hope you'll stop by to meet our members, tour our facilities, see our apparatus and learn important information that can save your life."
