Press release

U.S. Rep. Kathy Hochul has announced $254,877 in funding from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for the State University of New York at Buffalo. The grant is for the development and use of robots for space exploration, as well as by manufacturers and businesses in the U.S.

"I am pleased to announce this opportunity for UB that will not only contribute to our country's space program, but also foster innovative new technology for manufactures here in Western New York and across the country," Hochul said. "As I have in the past, I will continue to support investment in pioneering research and development that can help spur job growth in our area."

"Manipulating flexible materials and deformable objects is a key challenge in developing robots to work with humans in manufacturing and NASA applications," said Robert Platt, Ph.D. of UB. "The purpose of this project is to develop new approaches to flexible materials handling that will dramatically expand the capabilities of today's robot systems. This work will expand the potential for robots in the home, in space, and in manufacturing."
