The Village of Lewiston Recreation Department, with the help of the Lewiston Garden Club, is sponsoring the 16th annual Lewiston Country Fair and Community Yard Sale on Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Lewiston Red Brick Municipal Building, 145 N. Fourth St.

The Recreation Department is looking for amateur gardeners, farmers, bakers, photographers and creative children and adults to join in the fair. The Lewiston Garden Club will help with the registration and the judging.

Registration for the competition will begin at 8:45 a.m. and continue to 10 a.m. Judging will take place from 10 to 11 a.m. Registration and category forms are available at the village offices or the Recreation Center in the Red Brick.

As with all country fairs, there will be competition for the best in vegetables, flowers, baking, relishes and jams, salsa and pickles, scarecrows, crafts and photography. Forms are available in the Village Clerk's office, at the Recreation Department, or by calling 754-1990.

Additional activities at the Country Fair include:

•The Community Yard Sale on the grounds of the Red Brick. Participants can rent a space for the day to showcase their yard sale items to the public. From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., the public is invited to check out some real bargains. The yard sale is the true recycling time.

Those interested in obtaining a space can call 754-1990 or fill out an application in the Village Clerk's Office.

•The Village of Lewiston Recreation Department and the Lewiston Museum invite the public to the third series of the Historic Photo Clothesline Show from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the Red Brick gym. With more than 100 photos in this collection, this year the focus will be on the Robert Moses Parkway, the Lewiston Queenston Bridge, ships of the Niagara, and area homes and buildings. In addition, pen and ink sketches of buildings, circa 1990 of Lewiston and Youngstown, will be featured. They were created by Youngstown resident Richard Priday.

•The Lewiston Junior Garden Club will host a "Make your own Arrangement" from 11:30 a.m. until supplies are depleted. Children age 3 to 93 years old can make an arrangement with mums by stopping by the Junior Garden Club Booth. All supplies will be provided free of charge.

•During the 16th annual Country Fair, the Recreation Department will feature music in the large tent. A Step in Time will perform from 10 a.m. to noon, The Niagara Frontier Fiddle Club plays from noon until 2 p.m., and Another Thyme from 2 to 4 p.m.

Free popcorn, drinks and balloons will be available for visitors, a Bounce-n-Around house will be open from noon until 2 p.m., and a petting zoo for children will run from 1 to 3 p.m. for children.

All the events are free and open to residents and non-residents alike. The Country Fair will be held rain or shine with as many events moving inside as possible in the event of inclement weather.
