Erie County Sheriff's Office Report for Aug. 31, 2012

The Erie County Sheriff's Office responded to 153 calls from Aug. 11 to 17. Below is a sampling of the noteworthy incidents on Grand Island.

Deputies responded to 13 burglary false alarm calls during the dates of this report.

Saturday, Aug. 11

•Ward Park Road, criminal mischief - A complainant stated that, sometime during the night, someone damaged plants in his garden.

•South State Parkway, suspicious vehicle - A complainant stated that a suspicious vehicle was parked on the side of the road. Deputies were able to locate the vehicle and advised the driver.

•Stony Point Road, warrant arrest - Deputies arrested a juvenile offender on two outstanding warrants. The warrants were from Town of Grand Island and City of Tonawanda. The juvenile offender was transported to the Erie County Holding Center.

Sunday, Aug. 12

•Hazelwood Lane, suspicious person - A complainant stated that two subjects in masks were running through the neighborhood. Deputies located the subjects, who were playing a prank on friends at a party. The subjects were advised.

•Baseline Road, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that she heard someone attempting to break into her residence. Deputies located the subject, who was a family member that came home early from a friend's house.

•Huth Road, criminal mischief - A complainant stated that, sometime during the night, someone threw eggs at his car. No damage was reported.

•East Park Road, reckless operation - A complainant stated a vehicle was speeding through the neighborhood. Deputies located the vehicle and advised the driver.

•Stony Point Road, loud music - A complainant stated that loud music was coming from a residence in the area. Deputies located the source of the music and advised the homeowner to turn the music down.

•Oakridge Drive, suspicious person - A complainant stated that a younger male subject was skateboarding through the neighborhood during the late evening hours. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the subject.

•Town Hall Terrace, loud music - A complainant stated that loud music was coming from an apartment in the complex. Deputies located the apartment and advised the subjects to turn their television down.

•Baseline Road, suspicious vehicle - A complainant stated that a vehicle was parked behind Sidway Elementary School late at night. Deputies located two subjects with the vehicle and advised them. The subjects left without incident. No damage was observed.

Monday, Aug. 13

•Grand Island Boulevard, drunk driving - Following a traffic stop and subsequent investigation, deputies arrested a 32 -year-old woman from Grand Island for driving while intoxicated and other traffic violations. The woman refused to submit a sample of her breath for chemical analysis. She was issued an appearance ticket returnable to Town of Grand Island Court and released to a sober third party.

•Grand Island Boulevard, larceny - A complainant stated that while she was working at a pharmacy her wallet was stolen. Patrol was able to ascertain a possible suspect involved, and an investigation into the manner is ongoing.

•Whitehaven Road animal loose - A complainant stated a large dog was running loose in the area. Deputies checked but were unable to locate the dog. The dog control officer was notified.

•Grand Island Boulevard, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Grand Island Boulevard, property found - An employee at a business stated that a wallet was found in the parking lot. Deputies were able to contact the owner, and the wallet was returned.

•East River Road, youth activity - A complainant stated that youths were seen jumping into the Niagara River from Fisherman's Landing. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the youths.

•Staley Road, suspicious person - A complainant stated that a couple suspicious persons were in their driveway looking into vehicles. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate any subjects. No larcenies or damage were reported.

•Woodlee Lane, suspicious person - A complainant stated that someone was knocking on her door late at night and then running away. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate any subjects.

•Broadway youth activity - A complainant stated that youths were throwing branches into the street late at night. Deputies located the youths, who cleaned up the branches.

Tuesday, Aug. 14

•Whitehaven Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Town Hall Terrace, drunk driving - Following a traffic stop and subsequent investigation, deputies arrested a 47 -year-old woman from Grand Island for driving while intoxicated. The woman submitted to a chemical analysis of her breath and registered a .19 percent blood-alcohol content (more than double the legal limit). She was also charged with aggravated driving while intoxicated due to the elevated readings. She was issued an appearance ticket returnable to Town of Grand Island Court and released to a sober third party.

•Pleasant Trail Road, suspicious person - A complainant stated that a suspicious male was riding a bicycle in the neighborhood and appeared to checking out houses. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the subject.

•Grand Island Boulevard, warrant arrest - Following an unrelated complaint, deputies arrested a 31-year-old woman from Buffalo after a check showed she had an outstanding arrest warrant issued in the City of Buffalo. She was turned over to the custody of the Buffalo Police Department.

Wednesday, Aug. 15

•Long Road, loud music - A complainant stated that loud music was coming from a residence in the neighborhood. Deputies checked but were unable to locate any loud music in the area.

•Colonial Drive East, all-terrain vehicle operation - A complainant stated that an ATV was riding on private property and became stuck. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the ATV.

•Baseline Road, accident with injury - Deputies responded to a report of a three-car motor vehicle accident. Multiple victims were transported to local hospitals with serious injuries.

•East River Road, property found - A complainant stated that he found a wallet in the roadway. Deputies were unable to contact the owner and are waiting for the wallet to be claimed.

•Alt Boulevard, reckless operation - A complainant stated that a vehicle was doing doughnuts in a parking lot and causing minor damage to some property.

•Whitehaven Road, welfare check - Deputies responded to a report of a 911 hang-up call. Deputies were able to make contact with the homeowner and determined the call was a misdial.

•Ransom Road, suspicious incident - A complainant stated a vehicle was parked near an open window at Grand Island High School. Deputies located the owner, who was a teacher at the school.

•East River Road, suspicious vehicle - Deputies located a suspicious vehicle parked underneath the South Grand Island Bridge near some construction equipment. No subjects were around the vehicle and no damage was observed.

•Grand Island Boulevard, reckless operation - A complainant stated a vehicle was driving erratically on Grand Island Boulevard. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the vehicle.

•Bedell Road, ATV operation - A complainant stated that a dirt bike was speeding through Veterans Park. Deputies checked the area but were unable to determine who the operator was.

•East River Road, reckless operation - A complainant stated a vehicle was driving erratically on East River Road. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the vehicle.

•Stony Point Road, motorist broke down - Deputies assisted a motorist whose vehicle became disabled.

•Bedell Road, suspicious vehicle - Deputies located a suspicious vehicle parked in Veterans Park late at night. No subjects were around the vehicle and no damage was observed.

Thursday, Aug. 16

•Grand Island Boulevard, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

Friday, Aug. 17

•Bedell Road, ATV operation - A complainant stated a dirt bike was operating in Veterans Park and damaging baseball diamonds. Deputies checked the area but were unable to determine the operator of the dirt bike.

•Buckhorn State Park property found - A complainant stated that he found a bicycle in the weeds in Buckhorn State Park. Deputies located the bicycle and brought it to the Grand Island Substation to be claimed.

•Settlers Row welfare check - Deputies responded to a report of a 911 hang up call. Deputies were able to make contact with the homeowner and determined the call was a misdial.

•East Park Road, youth activity - A complainant stated that youths in the area threw an egg at her vehicle. No damage was observed.

 

The Erie County Sheriff's Office responded to 195 calls from Aug. 18 to 24. Below is a sampling of the noteworthy incidents on Grand Island.

Deputies responded to 14 burglary false alarm calls during the dates of this report.

Saturday, Aug. 18

•East River Road, larceny - A complainant stated that a known person was stealing checks from his residence. Deputies investigation led to the arrest of a juvenile offender for grand larceny in the fourth degree (class E felony), petit larceny (a class A misdemeanor), forgery in the third degree (a class A misdemeanor), and possession of a hypodermic instrument (Class A misdemeanor). The 20-year-old juvenile offender was transported to the Erie County Holding Center pending arraignment in the Town of Grand Island Court.

•Pin Oak Circle, suspicious vehicle - A complainant stated that a suspicious vehicle was abandoned on the street. Prior to deputies' arrival, the vehicle's driver returned and left the area.

•Beaver Lane, narcotics - Deputies' investigation into a larceny complaint in the area led to the arrest of a 20-year-old juvenile offender for possession of a hypodermic Instrument (a class A misdemeanor). The juvenile offender was issued an appearance ticket returnable to Town of Grand Island Court.

•Tracey Lane, ATV operation - A complainant stated that subjects were operating dirt bikes on the street and through private property. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the subjects.

•East River Road, suspicious person - A complainant stated that an intoxicated male was seen getting into a vehicle and possibly going to drive away. Deputies located the male, who was only retrieving property from the vehicle.

•Grand Island Boulevard, fight - Employees at an amusement park stated that several subjects were fighting inside the amusement park. Deputies located the subjects involved and escorted them from the premises without incident. No injuries were reported.

•East River Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Grand Island Boulevard, youth activity - A complainant stated that several youths were wandering around in the roadway. Deputies located the youths, who were waiting for the bus, and advised them to stay out of the street.

•Baseline Road, suspicious person - A complainant stated that two subjects were jumping in and out of traffic. Deputies located the subjects and advised them.

•First Street, loud music - A complainant stated that loud music was coming from a residence late at night. Deputies located the source of the music and advised the homeowner.

•River Oaks Drive, loud music - A complainant stated that loud music was coming from a residence late at night. Deputies located the source of the music and advised the homeowner.

Sunday, Aug. 19

•Greenway Road, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that a neighbor was shooting a BB gun in his yard and damaged the complainant's residence. Deputies spoke to all parties involved and advised them.

•East River Road, attempted break in - Deputies responded to a report of an alarm ringing on East River Road. While en route, deputies received a call from the homeowner who stated a male subject was attempting to break into the residence through a window. The male subject began to flee when the alarm sounded. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the subject. Erie County Sheriff's Office detectives and Crime Scene Unit responded to the scene. An investigation into the matter is ongoing. The suspect is described as a white male in his early 20s with dark-colored hair. •Grand Island Boulevard, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Grand Island Boulevard, animal complaint - A complainant stated that a dog was inside of a parked vehicle and appeared to be in distress. Deputies were able to locate the owner and determined the dog was in good health.

•I-190 motorist broke down - Deputies assisted a motorist whose vehicle had become disabled.

•East River Road, trespass - A complainant stated that three youths were trespassing on his dock. Deputies located the youths and advised them.

Monday, Aug. 20

•Love Road, fire investigation - Erie County Sheriff's detectives from the Arson Investigation Unit assisted the Grand Island Fire Co. with its investigation into a barn fire on Love Road. The cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

•Fix Road, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Marilyn Drive, welfare check - Deputies responded to a report of a 911 hang up call. Deputies spoke to the homeowner and determined the call was a misdial.

•Long Road, youth activity - A complainant stated that youths were hanging out around the Metz Building. Deputies located the youths and escorted them from the property without incident. No new damage was observed.

•Jamestown Road, criminal mischief - A complainant stated that, sometime during the night, someone damaged property in her front yard.

•Huth Road, suspicious person - Deputies located two subjects longboarding late at night. The subjects were advised.

Tuesday, Aug. 21

•Forest Creek Lane, loud music - A complainant stated that loud music was coming from a residence late at night. Deputies located the source of the music and advised the homeowner.

•Grand Island Boulevard, suspicious vehicle - Deputies located a suspicious vehicle parked on the side of the road late at night. The driver appeared to be lost, so deputies assisted him in locating his destination.

•Grand Island Boulevard, larceny - A complainant stated that, sometime during the night, someone stole scrap metal from his property. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.

•East River Road, suspicious person - A complainant stated that a suspicious male was walking underneath the South Grand Island Bridge with various items in his hands. Deputies located the subject, who stated he was walking to the bus stop.

•Ransom Road, larceny - A complainant stated that a known subject stole her bicycle from Grand Island High School. Deputies located the subject, who agreed to return the bicycle. The complainant did not wish to pursue charges.

•Ransom Road, welfare check - Deputies responded to a report of a 911 hang-up call. Deputies spoke to the homeowner and determined the call was a misdial.

•Huth Road, missing person - A complainant stated that his 6-year-old grandchild went missing from a playground. Deputies and family members were able to locate the child a short distance away. The child had wandered away and was unharmed.

•Kirkwood Drive, suspicious person - A complainant stated that two subjects in a canoe were firing a pellet gun. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the subjects who apparently entered back into the Niagara River.

•Grand Island Boulevard, hit-and-run accident - A complainant stated that a vehicle struck a parked vehicle and caused substantial damage. The suspect vehicle then fled the scene. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the vehicle. No injuries were reported.

•Whitehaven Road, accident with injury - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. Two occupants were transported to local hospitals with seemingly not life-threatening injuries.

•Ferry Road, criminal mischief - A complainant stated, that sometime in recent days, an unknown person egged his residence, causing minor damage.

•Bedell Road, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that he heard a female screaming on the bike path in the area of an apartment complex. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate any subjects.

•Schwegler Road, suspicious incident - A complainant stated that several subjects were knocking on doors in the neighborhood and using fireworks. Deputies checked the area and found several subjects walking, but all denied any knowledge of the incident.

Wednesday, Aug. 22

•Grand Island Boulevard, motorist broke down - Deputies assisted a motorist whose vehicle ran out of fuel.

•Ferry Road, suspicious vehicle - A complainant stated that a vehicle had been parked in a marina parking lot for approximately a week. Deputies were able to locate the registered owner, who owned a boat docked at the marina.

•Whitehaven Road, burglary - Deputies responded to a report of a burglary alarm. Upon arrival, deputies found a door that had seemingly been pried open. As deputies were searching the building, they found two subjects inside who fled when they saw patrol. As the subjects fled out of a door, they were detained by another deputy who was posted on the perimeter. Deputies charged 21-year-old Matthew Ludwig and 21-year-old Nicholas Muoyo, both of Grand Island, with burglary in third degree (a class D felony), criminal mischief in the third degree (a class E felony) and possession of burglar tools (a class A misdemeanor). Both subjects were transported to the Town of Grand Island Court for arraignment.

Thursday, Aug. 23

•Bedell Road, suspicious person - A complainant stated that three suspicious males walked out of the woods and through the parking lot of an apartment complex. Deputies checked the area but were unable to locate the subjects.

•Whitehaven Road, accident with injury - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. One person was transported to a local hospital with seemingly not life-threatening injuries.

•Spicer Creek Run suspicious incident - A complainant stated that she heard noises coming from a residence on Spicer Creek Run. Deputies were able to contact the homeowner who was completing repairs on the home.

•Staley Road, animal complaint - A complainant stated that three horses were running around her property. Deputies located the owner of the horses and advised him.

•Grand Island Boulevard, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Ransom Road, criminal mischief - A complainant stated that, sometime during the day, an unknown person or persons broke a window on her vehicle.

•Grand Island Boulevard, larceny - An employee at a restaurant stated an unknown customer stole her cell phone sometime during business hours. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.

Friday, Aug. 24

•East River Road, residential burglary - A complainant stated sometime in recent days, someone broke into her residence by forcing open a window. At the time of the report, the complainant could not identify anything missing. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.

•Grand Island Boulevard, property-damage-only accident - Deputies responded to a report of a two-car motor vehicle accident. No injuries were reported.

•Alvin Road, suspicious person - A complainant stated that two suspicious males were looking into vehicles at a dealership while the business was closed. Deputies located the subjects, who stated they were looking to buy a vehicle. The subjects were advised to come back during business hours.

•Grand Island Boulevard, suspicious person - A complainant stated that a male subject was sleeping on a picnic table near the Grand Island Plaza. Deputies located the male and were able to contact a cab to drive him home.
