Push-cart shuffle now game of local thieves

Island business houses have been plagued by a slick operation unofficially noted as "push-cart shuffle."

A trio of ordinary looking shoppers, two adult men and a young boy, have entered stores during busy hours and on days when the store employs only a skeleton staff...

...One of the men loiters about in the front of the store, watching cashiers and other employees, while the other man fills the shopping cart and parks it near the end of the aisle. Apparently the young lad takes the parked carts out of the store through the rear exit when no one is observing him.

Final contracts let for school program

Transcon Equipment Corporation of Buffalo was the successful low bidder for general construction work involved in the $4.9 million schools improvement program now under way...

...Other awarded contracts at the School Board meeting Monday were Frank C. Kellner Company, and Matthew Kandefer Inc.

...Work on the bus garage and repairs and replacement of roofs on four schools has begun.

...Thomas Associates of Ithaca are architects for the project aimed at updating all Island schools to meet federal mandates, especially those concerning access for the handicapped.

Town to remove fire-damaged dairy building

The Town Board at a special meeting Monday morning agreed by resolution to authorize the removal of the portion of Mesmer Dairy on Love Road heavily damaged July 16 by fire...

..The board also authorized Building Inspector Douglas Learman to "immediately cause the removal of the fire-damaged building" and "to have the openings on said premises secured to prevent any unauthorized entry to the property," according to the resolution...

...(July 16) damage was estimated at $250,000 to the building and $50,000 to the contents.
