Press release

Though there were many carrousel companies during the "Golden Age" of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, only a handful are considered to have been major manufacturers. One of these was undoubtedly the Philadelphia Toboggan Company, or PTC.

In the next installment of the Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum's free "Carrousel Chat" lecture series, the museum is pleased to have author Richard A. Gardner on hand to discuss his new book, "PTC Carousels: The History of the Philadelphia Toboggan Company Carousels" (published by The Connecticut Press). Gardner, a retired Massachusetts native who now resides in San Jose, Calif., has had a long-time interest in carrousels, and has spent the past several years researching and photographing PTC carrousels across the U.S. and Canada.

This illustrated reference work featuring more than 300 photographs is the first comprehensive history of the legendary company's hand-carved carrousels, which were produced by some of the grand masters of the art. PTC produced or retrofitted some 93 carrousels from 1904-34, all of which are represented in Gardner's work (including those that have been destroyed or are no longer available to the public).

The event takes place Monday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m. A book signing will follow the discussion.

The Herschell Carrousel Factory Museum is housed in the historic Allan Herschell Company Factory building at 180 Thompson St., North Tonawanda.
