Louise Hines, R.N., center, of Niagara Falls, has been awarded the Ruth and William O. Sass Nursing Scholarship for 2012-13.

Named in honor of Dr. and Mrs. William O. Sass, the scholarship encourages excellence in the field of nursing by supporting the course of study for a baccalaureate degree. It is awarded annually, with applications due in the spring, to graduates of high schools located in the communities where Dr. and Mrs. Sass lived and worked.

The Ruth and William O. Sass, M.D. Scholarship Fund has provided 27 health-care related scholarships totaling more than $36,000 during its 20-year history and is funded through an endowment in their names at the Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center Foundation.

Hines, shown here with Memorial Vice President Ann Marie Tucker, left, and Memorial President and CEO Joseph A. Ruffolo, began work at Memorial as a licensed practical nurse in 1994 and became a registered nurse in 1999. She is pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Nursing degree at Niagara University.
