American Legion motorcyclists from around the country will arrive in the Buffalo area for the 2012 American Legion Riders Legacy Run Home, hosted by Wheatfield American Legion Post 1451. Beginning Friday, Aug. 17, their ultimate destination will be Indianapolis.

"The legacy run is meant to escort the legion commander to Indianapolis for the annual American Legion convention and to bring attention and raise money towards the scholarship fund," says Sam Reeder, director of the Greater Niagara American Legion Riders.

The ride will include two overnight stops as well as five stops at local legion posts. The Legacy Run acts as a central fundraiser for the Legacy Scholarship Fund, which provides scholarships to children of American military members who have been killed in action since Sept. 11, 2011. The run has awarded $300,000 since its beginning in 2006, and has a goal of a $20 million fund. This year's run is hoped to bring at least $450,000 to the fund.

The run will escort National American Legion Commander Fang Wong to the convention in Indianapolis, a ride of more than 750 miles. The estimated count of motorcycles expected to attend is 300 and growing.

"We have riders coming from Hawaii, Texas, California, Pennsylvania - all over the place for this ride," Reeder says.

There will be a kick-off dinner on Aug. 20 at the Wheatfield post. It will be attended by Wong and State Sen. George Maziarz.
