Fun season ahead for Isle youngsters

The Recreation Department anticipates a "better-than-ever" summer season, with the addition of Tower Park on Carl Road. Supervised by Andrea Leeds of Grand Island and Lyndall Judd of the Erie County Recreation Department, the park provides entertainment and exercise for village youngsters ... .

Programs continue this summer at ... (area) playgrounds with (different volunteers) ... . Special events and arts and crafts are also planned for each week of the G.I. Recreation program. These will include a kite-flying contest, pet show, bicycle decorating contest, puppet show and magic show.

Early tavern closing favored here

The closing hour for taverns in Erie County is now 4 a.m., while in nearby Niagara County the time is 2 a.m. A survey of Grand Islanders this week revealed many would welcome the 2 a.m. closing hour ... .

Enacting the change would take action by the Erie County Legislature, the Island Dispatch learned this week ... .

What is happening on Grand Island is happening as well in Tonawanda - bar patrons in Niagara County ... drive here or to Tonawanda, where taverns are allowed to stay open an extra two hours. Deputy sheriffs patrolling the Island during the wee small hours of the morning issue driving while intoxicated summonses to more than a few Niagara County motorists, according to reports.

Canadian Bridge to GI on Hold

Canadian investors interested in financing construction of a private toll bridge between Fort Erie and the Island apparently are taking a second look at the proposal.

Gen. Richard Rohner, who heads the Niagara New Bridge Corp., has informed Erie County Legislator Charles M. Swanick, "Given the state of the recession, it has been deemed appropriate to hold the matter in abeyance ... ."

"When first announced, there was total opposition from the town, the Chamber of Commerce, and a citizens committee headed by John Pax," Swanick said yesterday.

The Town Board meeting Dec. 4, 1991, went on record in opposition to the span ... . The board agreed that the town doesn't need "another bridge funneling into our bridge going off the Island as there is enough congestion now... ."

Graffiti vandals strike on Grand Island

Sometime overnight on Monday, July 15, vandals struck at least four locations on Grand Island. The vandals left graffiti on buildings, vehicles, and signs. Among the locations hit were St. Timothy's Lutheran Church, HSBC Bank, and Auto Fix. It appears that the vandalism was the work of the same person or persons.

Grand Island Town Supervisor Peter McMahon said, "We will be asking all of the law enforcement agencies on Grand Island to increase surveillance ... .  (W)e are asking anyone who observes suspicious activity to immediately report it to the police."
