Twelve children from Niagara County are currently attending the New York State Sheriffs' Association Institute's 2011 Summer Camp.

The Sheriffs' Summer Camp, located near Penn Yan in Yates County, is designed to provide a solid recreational program combined with the development of a sense of good citizenship. This will mark the 35th year of the camp's operation.

Niagara County Sheriff James Voutour thanked the numerous citizens and businesses that contributed as honorary members this year to the Sheriff's Association, which helps support the camp. Niagara County was one of the leading counties in the entire state for contributions.

Twelve Niagara County campers boarded a bus Sunday, June 26, for their weeklong stay at the camp.

"There were some tears and some smiles on the bus this morning. Some first time campers are a little apprehensive to leave their families for a week," Voutour said. "We see those same tears when they board the bus to come home, they don't want to leave camp!" Voutour saw the kids off with Deputy Joe Flagler, a long time camp counselor.
