The gymnasium at St. Stephen School is reserved for the local/Council 4752 championship, the first level of the Knights of Columbus Free Throw Championship, on Saturday, Jan. 15.
Registration begins at 12:30 p.m. and closes at 1:30 pm. Competition begins promptly at 1:30 p.m. Competition at this level, and in subsequent levels, is limited to boys and girls 10 to 14 years of age as of Jan. 1, 2011. The entrant, as well as the parent or guardian, must sign the official entry form. Proof of age/birth certificate is required.
Each contestant gets three warm-up tosses and 15 official attempts from a specified free throw line, using a designated, regulation-size basketball. The score of each entrant is tabulated and used to determine up to 10 winners, one boy and one girl in each age group. Ties are broken with successive rounds of five free throws per contestant. The winners move on to the district competition, the second level, in February.
