Representatives available to provide details & answer questions on application, nomination process

Congressman Brian Higgins and representatives from the office of U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand are hosting a virtual Service Academy information event at 6 p.m. Monday, Oct. 3. The session will provide an opportunity for Western New York high school students, families, school administrators and counselors to learn more about service academy institutions, programs, and the application and nomination process.

Representatives from the U.S. Military Academy, Naval Academy, Air Force Academy, Merchant Marine Academy, Coast Guard Academy, as well as the Army and Navy R.O.T.C programs will provide presentations and be available to answer questions.

“Academy Night provides a great opportunity for students to hear first-hand about the application process, as well as the academy experience from alumni who’ve been through it themselves,” Higgins said. “Students considering this higher-education path are encouraged to attend.”

Gillibrand said, “Academy Night will give parents and students the opportunity to learn more about the admissions process and educational experience at our nation’s service academies and armed forces. Our service academies cultivate top-tier officers who are committed to serving our country. This event will help interested students learn about the renowned training and mentorship programs available at the academies.”

Service Academy appointments are made by the president of the United States based on congressional and/or military nominations. Each year, Gillibrand and Higgins appoint academy advisory boards, made up of Western New York veterans and community leaders, to interview applicants and make recommendations.

Information about the application and nomination process can be found on Gillibrand’s website at https://www.gillibrand.senate.gov/help/academy-nominations, and on Higgins’ website at https://higgins.house.gov/services/military-academy-nominations/military-academy-nominations-print-form.
