'Buffalo's Best Kielbasa' contest winners announced

Five winners from 27 entries chosen by panel of judges

After a two-year absence, Buffalo’s Best Kielbasa contest was back to crown the best homemade sausagemakers in Western New York. The culinary showdown took place Saturday at Flying Bison Brewing Co., kicking off the “Pils, Pierogi & Polka” event.

A record 27 entries were received this year, all from homemade sausagemakers. Winners were announced in the following categories:

  • Fresh Traditional – David & Michael Pruski
  • Smoked Traditional – John Kudla
  • Fresh Holiday (w. marjoram) – Rick Swiantek
  • Smoked Holiday (w. marjoram) – Steve Slazak
  • Non-Traditional – John Kudla

The following judges picked the winners from the entries received:

  • Roy Bakos – Café Godot
  • Melanie Camp – “AM Buffalo”
  • David Franczyk – Co-founder, “Buffalo’s Best Kielbasa”
  • Dave Greber – News 4 Buffalo
  • Tim Herzog – Flying Bison Brewing Co.
  • Tod Kniazuk – The Big Easy in Buffalo / St. Adalbert Basilica
  • Hon. Mitch Nowakowski – Fillmore District Representative, Buffalo Common Council
  • Sr. Johnice Rzadkiewicz – Response To Love Center
  • Susan Swiatkowski – Niagara Wine Trail

“Thanks to everyone who entered, sharing their family recipes and traditions for this event,” Kniazuk said. “It was a close contest, with all the entries being worthy of the title.”
