The Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens is working through a natural progression within the organization and, after 11 years as president/CEO, David J. Swarts will be transitioning into retirement over the next several months.

Board Chair Miche Needham said, “We are grateful for Dave’s expertise and leadership over the last decade and he will truly be missed. Through his leadership, the Botanical Gardens experienced a period of tremendous growth that enabled us to embark on an exciting master plan that will ensure the Botanical Gardens will flourish for generations to come.”

The Board of Directors created a transition plan and formed a search committee to conduct a national search for a new president/CEO. Swarts will remain on during this evolutionary process. Erin Grajek, the Botanical Gardens’ vice president, was promoted to chief operating officer to help ensure stability within the day-to-day operations going forward.

A press release noted, “The Botanical Gardens also has a committed board of directors, a dedicated and professional staff, outstanding volunteers, members and donors to ensure the organizations’ future success.”

Swarts said, “Our team continues to do an incredible job and I have great confidence that the Botanical Gardens’ best days lie ahead. I am thankful for the opportunity to be part of this extraordinary organization. Working with so many wonderful people over the years has been personally rewarding beyond my wildest expectations. To be associated with a national treasure like the Buffalo and Erie County Botanical Gardens and an opportunity to advance a mission that values the importance of preserving our natural world has been tremendously fulfilling, both personally and professionally. I am eternally grateful for the community of support surrounding the Botanical Gardens. We couldn’t have done it without you!”
