Fri, Oct 30th 2020 11:10 am

It’s proving to be an impressive October for Lewiston-Porter boys soccer, according to team coach Rick Sweeney. The 2019 Niagara Frontier League champions kicked off their 2020 season earlier this month with a 4-0 shutout over Ken East.

Jake Forney opened the scoring four minutes into this one after redirecting a shot from Spencer Reisman off his head. Forney knocked his second goal of the game home again with a header off a shot from Robert Woods 11 minutes into the match.

Woods opened the scoring in the second half off an assist from Jacob Niccola. He closed out the scoring off an assist from Justin Dillon that sprung him in on a breakaway.

Nathan Russell earned the first shutout of the season facing only one shot. Defenders Dominic Massaro, Nathan Jowdy and Josh Long played a well-organized game defensively.

With the win, Lew-Port stood at 1-0, while Ken East was 0-1.

In its second match Lew-Port beat CSAT in NFL soccer, 11-0, moving their record to 2-1 overall and in league play. CSAT fell to 0-4.

Spencer Reisman had three goals and one assist, Robert Woods added two goals and one assist, while Jake Forney had one goal and one assist. Single goal scorers included Drew Leardini, Eli Veltri, Jacob Niccola, Justin French and Luke Lombardo. Nate Russell earned his second shutout of the year.

For its third match, Lew-Port beat North Tonawanda 4-0 in Niagara Frontier League play to bring their record to 3-1. NT stood at 2-2.

Robert Woods had all four goals for Lew-Port as the Lancers found the back of the net within the first 23 minutes of the match. The opening goal came on an assist by Jake Forney, while Spencer Reisman assisted Woods on the next three goals. Woods completed his hat trick within the first 18 minutes.

Nathan Russell earned his third shutout for the year with strong defensive games played by Luke Lombardo, Dominic Massaro, Josh Long and Nathan Jowdy.

Next up, Lew-Port defeated Lockport 1-0 in Niagara Frontier League play on a winning goal from Alastair Sweeney and an assist by Eli Veltri.

Nathan Russell earned his fourth shutout of the season, making eight saves. The Lancers’ Jake Forney, Josh Long, Nathan Jowdy and Dominic Massaro have all played strong, organized defensive games for Lew-Port, Sweeney said.

Lockport came into this game undefeated and ranked seventh in WNY among large schools and moved to 3-1 in NFL play and 4-1-1 overall. Lew-Port, meanwhile, moved to 4-2 overall and in NFL play.

And the winning ways continued as Lew-Port defeated West Seneca West 5-0 in a non-league match.

Robert Woods scored twice, to open the lead to 2-0 in the first 15 minutes. The two goals brought him to 10 goals for the season. Jacob Niccola scored twice and Alastair Sweeney scored once.

Jake Forney and Dominic Palumbo both had two assists for the day and the shutout was shared by Nathan Russell and Quinn Walton.

Lew-Port stood at 5-2 overall following the contest, while West Seneca West was 3-5.

Lew-Port then topped Grand Island 3-0 in NFL play. Robert Woods opened the scoring five minutes in, on a thrown ball behind the defense from Spencer Reisman.

Woods opened the lead in the 70th minute once again, set up from a pass from Reisman. He would go on to be a factor in Lew-Port’s third goal. Here, Reisman found Justin Dillon with a well-placed pass, switching the point of attack to find Dillon at the back post from 10 yards out.

Nathan Russell earned his fifth shutout for the season with well-organized defensive play from Luke Lombardo, Dominic Massaro, Josh Long and Nathan Jowdy.

Lew-Port put up three straight shutouts while outscoring opponents 9-0 and beating two teams ranked in the top 10 among large schools in WNY (Lockport and Grand Island).
