Buffalo Zoo continues fundraising efforts for Australian wildfire relief

Supporters & organizations answer call for help

Though many of the fires have subsided, the widespread damage from the massive bushfires in Australia remains. Experts say over 1 billion animals – some who are only found in Australia – have died in the blazes.

As recovery efforts continue, the Buffalo Zoo is working with local organizations to raise funds for the zoo’s Victoria Emergency Wildlife Fund.

“The headlines will fade, but the devastation remains. I want to thank the Western New York community for their continued support. We know it is a very long road to recovery, and our contributions will make a difference,” said Norah Fletchall Buffalo Zoo president and CEO.

Through the month of February, a portion of proceeds from Buffalo Zoo admission and car parking will go to the Victoria Emergency Wildlife Fund. The Buffalo Zoo board of directors will match contributions up to $10,000.

Additionally, the Buffalo Zoo is partnering with local organizations for fun events and opportunities to generate support:

•Country music lovers can enter to win an all-expenses-paid vacation to Las Vegas to see Keith Urban live in concert. The trip includes a meet-and-greet with Urban, roundtrip airfare, hotel stay and $500 in cash. This unique opportunity is offered in partnership with “Country 106.5” WYRK. Enter to win at www.buffalozoo.org. One must be age 21 or older to enter.

•On Feb. 13, the Buffalo Zoo will team up with the Aquarium of Niagara, Community Beer Works and the Pro Zoo Board of the Buffalo Zoo for a happy hour from 5:30-8:30 p.m. at Community Beer Works. Guests can enjoy Frank Pale Ale, basket raffles and live music. A portion of proceeds will benefit the Buffalo Zoo fund. Tickets are $10.

The Buffalo Zoo would like to thank the Buffalo Seminary and Casey Middle School for their community fundraising efforts. Each school planned fundraising events and donated the proceeds to the Buffalo Zoo.

The Buffalo Zoo is open daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Grounds close at 5 pm. Until March 1, guests can visit the zoo with reduced admission of $8.95 for all. Parking is $5 per car. For more information about the Buffalo Zoo, or to make a donation online, visit www.buffalozoo.org.
