Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra & EarShot present brand-new orchestral works by emerging composers SiHyun Uhm, Vincent Calianno, Sid Richardson, Sakari Vanderveer

Free live reading of new works to be held at Kleinhans Music Hall on Wednesday, Jan. 29

At 7 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 29, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra and EarShot, the National Orchestral Composition Discovery Network, present readings of new works by four emerging composers at Kleinhans Music Hall. These free readings will be the culmination of a series of private readings, feedback sessions, and work with mentor composers Robert Beaser, Chen Yi and Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate as part of the BPO’s mentoring composers program.

The selected composers and their works, chosen from a national call for scores, are:

• “Ladybug In the Room“ by SiHyun Uhm
• “The Facts and Dreams of the World According to Michael Jackson“ by Vincent Calianno
• “Door to the River“ by Sid Richardson
• “The Castle Upon Crystal Shores“ by Sakari Vanderveer

The audience is invited to a reception immediately following the readings where they can meet and interact with the composers.

BPO Career Development Seminar

Additionally, the BPO will hold a free career development seminar for composers, also on Jan. 29, from 2-5 p.m. at the BPO administrative office at 786 Delaware Ave. This free seminar covers key topics for developing a successful career as a composer. Experts from the field will present on the following topics:

•Workshop 1: Beyond the Music – Copyright and Publishing: What are the pros and cons of self-publishing? What services does a publisher actually provide, and what other kinds of support systems are there for those who need them? What are any changing issues in the copyright area? What is most important for a composer to keep in mind when delivering manuscripts to a publisher or copyist?

•Workshop 2: Perspectives on programming: How do presenting and performing organizations decide what to program? What’s the best way to get noticed and get programmed? How can my work at least be considered?

Frank J. Oteri of New Music USA will serve as moderator. Panelists include William Lackey of American Composers Forum, Jamie Leigh Sampson of ADJective Music Publishing, Rob Deemer of The Institute for Composer Diversity, Pat Kimball of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra Library, David Felder of SUNY Buffalo music department and Alison Bolton of the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra operations.
