Cuomo signs statewide multiuse trails plan bill

Parks & Trails New York joined Assemblywoman Patricia Fahy to thank Gov. Andrew Cuomo for signing legislation (S.4416B/A.5035B) directing the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation to develop a coordinated plan for linking existing trails with potential trail corridors.

A press release said, “Developing a blueprint for the state's trail system will unify local trails across the state, creating a network of trails with major spines and connecting routes, and ensure that all parts of the state have access to quality outdoor active recreation trails. This effort … supports additional opportunities that can transform our statewide trail system into a true network, connecting local trails with the main spine of the Empire State Trail and cementing New York's position as the nation's leader in multiuse trails.”

"This exciting legislation will ensure that New York builds upon the momentum of the Empire State Trail" said Robin Dropkin, executive director of Parks & Trails New York, "We thank Gov. Cuomo, Sen. Kaplan, and Assemblymember Fahy for their leadership and vision in making this plan a reality, and look forward to a future where communities across the state are connected by a world-class multiuse trail network."

The press release added, “Thanks to Fahy, (New York State Sen.) Anna Kaplan and members of the State Legislature, New York can maximize trail network connectivity and carry out its vision as the nation’s premier destination for outdoor tourism. An updated plan will guide trail development around the state and enable our communities to enjoy the economic, health and environmental benefits of multiuse trails. Creating and enacting the statewide trail plan will provide the framework for future projects that enhance multimodal connectivity and active transportation networks in New York.

“Trails and greenways provide a great deal of benefits to communities,” Fahy said. “They make it easier for New Yorkers to stay active and have fun. New York’s multiuse trails are fantastic – they protect open space, attract tourists, and provide safe places to explore – and are only growing thanks to Gov. Cuomo.”

The multiuse trails plan is a centerpiece of PTNY’s “Trails Across New York” campaign, which envisions a future in which all New Yorkers will have safe and reliable access to the state’s extensive trail network. Throughout New York, trails, bicycle boulevards and complete streets will be acknowledged as essential and mainstream elements of community infrastructure, much as utility lines and sidewalks are thought of today.

The press release concluded, “Building out our network will attract visitors from across the nation and abroad to experience the historic communities and varied, beautiful landscapes, as well as bolster New York state's reputation as a trail-rich and trail-friendly destination.”
