Niagara County Clerk Joseph Jastrzemski is launching a Purple Heart recognition initiative for county veterans who are or were recipients of the Purple Heart ― the oldest military award presented to American service members.

In addition to Niagara County receiving the distinction as an official Purple Heart County, a memorial “Book of Honor” commemorating these individuals’ brave service and sacrifice will be unveiled at a formal ceremony that will be held on National Purple Heart Day, at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, at the site of the Purple Heart monument at Raymond Klimek Veterans Park in North Tonawanda.

Niagara County veterans who’ve received the Purple Heart and wish to be included in the “Book of Honor” ceremony are asked to fill out the Purple Heart recipient form before the approaching submission deadline of Monday, June 3. The form can be accessed by going to the Niagara County clerk or veterans service agency website.

For more information, call the clerk’s office at 716-439-7022 or the veterans service agency at 716-438-4090.
