Niagara University's College of Education receives grant to help support summer STEM program

Niagara University’s College of Education has received a $60,000, two-year grant from National Grid to help support the college’s summer STEM camp initiative. The camps, now in their 11th year, are intended to engage young people in the practical application of science, technology, engineering and math, and to learn about careers in the STEM fields.

The grant will also provide financial assistance for pre-service and classroom teachers to teach in the STEM camps and expand their knowledge into their own respective school districts.

This year, the college, in partnership with National Grid, will offer four “STEM Power Camp” programs:

• Early childhood (ages 5-7): July 22-25, 9 a.m. to noon.
• Grades 3-5: July 22-25, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Grades 6-8: July 22-25, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.
• Young Women’s Camp (grades 7-9): July 29-Aug. 1, 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The camps will focus activities on such topics as renewable energy, electric vehicles, wind power and energy efficiencies. Students will use inquiry-based learning and real-life applications as they explore these topics. Emphasis in the Young Women’s Camp will focus on personal development, etiquette, leadership, investigation into careers, and job skills needed to meet the demands in tomorrow’s job market.

All activities will align with the New York State Next Generation Science standards.
