International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day is a day when people who are affected by suicide loss gather in their local communities to find comfort and gain understanding as they share stories of healing and hope. The International Survivors of Suicide Loss Day program, sponsored by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP), takes place each year on the Saturday before Thanksgiving.
Locally, this year's event is set for 1-3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 17, at Butler Rehabilitation Center on the campus of Buffalo Psychiatric Center, 400 Forest Ave., Buffalo.
Organizers said, "The program helps people to know that, if someone they love has died by suicide, they are not alone. This event is an opportunity for survivors to share their grief, reach out for support, and support others.
"Caring for those left behind in the aftermath of a suicide is an essential part of suicide prevention, because suicide loss survivors who are left to grieve alone are at greater risk for suicide themselves."
This year's program includes a screening of "A Daughter's Journey," an AFSP-produced documentary that follows Sarah, a young adult, through her story of milestones, family, coping, and positive growth after the loss of her father. The film shares hope, connection and resilience in the aftermath of a suicide loss. A local panel discussion will follow the broadcast.
There is no fee to attend, but registration is requested. To register, or for more information, call 716-816-2014 or email [email protected].
