The University at Buffalo is the No. 1 public university in New York state, according to the 2019 Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education College Ranking.
The WSJ/THE rankings differ from other ratings in that their methodology incorporates student success and learning by including the results of a student survey. The survey examines a range of key issues, including students' engagement with their studies, their interaction with their teachers and their satisfaction with their experience.
The overall methodology explores four key areas: resources, which represent 30 percent of the overall ranking; engagement (20 percent); outcomes (40 percent); and environment (10 percent).
UB saw significant improvement in its student engagement rank, moving up to No. 283 in the new rankings from 449th in last year's rankings among nearly 1,000 colleges and universities nationwide.
Among other highlights from this year's rankings, UB is:
  • No. 120 among public and private universities nationwide, which is significantly higher than its No. 147 ranking in 2016, the first year the WSJ/THE rankings were compiled.
  • No. 28 among public universities in the U.S.
  • No. 13 among all colleges in New York state.
  • No. 56 among all colleges in the Northeast.
Stony Brook was the next-highest-rated public university in New York, at No. 135, followed by Binghamton at No. 174.
UB ranked ahead several of its peers in the Association of American Universities, including the University of Arizona, University of Colorado Boulder, University of Iowa, Indiana University Bloomington, Rutgers and the University of Oregon.
The complete rankings will be published Sept. 20 on the Times Higher Education website.
Harvard University again topped the list, with Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Yale University rounding out the top three.
The Wall Street Journal/Times Higher Education rankings come less than two weeks after U.S. News & World Report released its rankings, in which UB jumped eight spots to No. 89 nationally and three spots, to No. 38, among public universities.
