Award for backpack donation program
Each September, AMR provides backpacks full of school supplies for students in need at Hyde Park Elementary School
American Medical Response (AMR) of Western New York has received an esteemed Community Service Award from the Niagara Falls Teachers (NFT) Union for its annual back-to-school backpack donation program that serves students in need at Hyde Park Elementary School. For years, AMR's employees have provided backpacks full of school supplies to ensure all students are ready for the school year before the bell rings on the first day.
While the awards ceremony was held at NFT's banquet in May, Hyde Park Elementary Principal Mary Kerins and Niagara Falls Schools Superintendent Mark Laurrie surprised AMR staff with the actual plaque as they were dropping off 20 backpacks the week before school started.
David Glahe, an award-winning second-grade teacher at Hyde Park Elementary and a director with NFT, announced the award for community service in May: "We are grateful every single day for AMR and their caring paramedics and EMTs who answer the call when people need assistance. While we all can acknowledge the great work they do in the communities they serve, today we are honoring them for answering a different call."
Since such a large percentage of students in the Niagara Falls school system are eligible for reduced lunch, Kerin said the donations are always greatly appreciated and much needed, but AMR has gone above and beyond in recent years.
"AMR has generously donated so many of these backpacks and school supplies over the years that we've been able to supply students year-round in response to any changing circumstances, like homelessness," she said. "It's easy to think of backpacks and supplies as a small thing, but, for children facing a difficult time, they mean the world. Knowing they have the same supplies as their classmates and have a backpack to carry their homework in, a treasured art project or a library book, not only lessens their burden, but brightens their days."
"We're honored and humbled to receive NFT's award for community service," said Tom Maxian, regional director of AMR. "As the leading provider of emergency medical services throughout Western New York, we recognize our role in the community goes beyond answering that 911 call. Our EMTs, paramedics and dispatchers are all from the Niagara Falls area, so we really feel the power of giving back."
