Registration is now open for "Building Buffalo and Beyond," which is the theme of the 2018 STEAM Conference. The Aug. 6-7 event, co-presented by the Education Collaborative of WNY and WNY STEM Hub, will be held on the Daemen College campus, 4380 Main St., Amherst.
"Building Buffalo and Beyond" features two days of workshops and learning experiences geared to educators from pre-kindergarten through grade 12 and higher education, plus informal STEM providers. The goal is to provide professional development for educators who inspire innovation and ingenuity in teaching science, technology, engineering, the arts and mathematics.
Workshops include sessions on creating STEAM nights in schools, using inquiry-based lessons to teach math, music and engineering, developing 3-D art studios, and the evolving role of the library in education.
Now in its fifth year, the annual event is a premier education event with a vested interest in the success of all students.
Eric Yarwood, executive director of the Education Collaborative of WNY, said, "This annual conference is an ideal way for regional educators to engage with STEAM resource providers and bring new idea into the classroom."
Cherie Messore, executive director of WNY STEM Hub, agreed: "Integrating the arts with science, technology, engineering and math inspires creativity contributes to innovation."
Andrew Franz, a teacher at Buffalo's Hamlin Park Claude and Ouida Clapp Academy, will deliver the keynote address. In 2017, Franz was recognized by the New York State Board of Regents as one of two recipients of the prestigious Milken Educator Awards.
