The Historical Association of Lewiston's April program is titled "Re-Capturing the Flag." The event will take place at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 26, at the Lutheran Church of the Messiah Fellowship Hall, 915 Oneida St.
Michael Blenk will present an illustrated presentation that will detail the return of the national colors of Fort Niagara that were taken by the British as a battle trophy in December 1813. After an absence of 181 years, this historic flag was returned to the Niagara Frontier.
Blenk was a member of the recovery team that journeyed to Megginch Castle, Scotland, to secure and transport the banner home in 1994. He will share logistics and circumstances of the repatriation journey.
A native of Long Island, Blenk and his family have resided in Youngstown since 1979. They have been active members of the Old Fort Niagara Association for the past 38 years. Blenk has served on that association's board of directors since 1986 and chaired the 1813 flag committee to repatriate the colors.
Blenk has a strong avocational background in the Lenni Lenape (Delaware) people and has excavated prehistoric sites in southern New Jersey. His work is published in the Bulletin of the Archaeological Society of New Jersey.
This community event is free and open to all. Refreshments will be served.
