ABC wins Sunday behind return of 'American Idol'

'Deception' is ABC's top scripted premiere in its slot since September 2015
Propelled by the debuts of ABC's "American Idol" and "Deception," the network dominated Sunday night by 70 percent over its nearest competition in adults 18-49 (1.7/7 vs. 1.0/4 - FOX). ABC was also the most watched network overall on the evening (8.2 million).
ABC's "American Idol" opened as Sunday's No. 1 show with total viewers (10.3 million) and adults 18-49 (2.3/8). ABC's "Deception" debut ranked as the night's No. 1 scripted broadcast with young adults (1.3/5) and was the No. 2 broadcast series of the night to "Idol."
ABC generated its most watched Sunday (8.2 million) with series programming in five-and-a-half years, since Sept. 30, 2012.
In its 8 p.m. debut opposite stiff competition from FOX's O.J. Simpson interview and AMC's "The Walking Dead," ABC's "American Idol" premiered with the network's biggest series audience (10.3 million) in the time period in four years and top adult 18-49 rating (2.3/8) since November 2014.
In the 10 o'clock hour, "Deception" debut ranked No. 1 in adults 18-49, beating NBC's "Timeless" premiere" by 63 percent in Adults 18-49 (1.3/5 vs. 0.8/3). "Deception" premiered sharply higher than ABC's most recent debut in the hour ("Ten Days in the Valley" on Oct. 1), improving its slot by 79 percent in total viewers (6.1 million vs. 3.4 million) and by 160 percent in adults 18-49 (1.3/5 vs. 0.5/2), standing as the net's top scripted premiere/debut in the time period since the series opener of "Quantico" in September 2015.
