At 1:44 p.m. on Saturday, July 22, Grand Island firefighters responded to a "wires down" call at 3190 Stony Point Road, between Huth Road and Majestic Woods.
Grand Island Fire Co. Assistant Fire Chief Dan Mathes stated that heavy arcing was taking place where a downed high-voltage line contacted the ground and started a small grass fire, which was quickly extinguished. A safety zone was established using engines Nos. 4 and 5 pending arrival of a National Grid repair crew. Meanwhile, over 100 local residents remained without power.
The hazard was eliminated at 3:15 p.m. while restoration operations were underway.
The roadway was reopened at that time and all GIFC units returned to service by 3:27 p.m.
Household fire confined to kitchen appliance
At 8:17 p.m. on Monday, July 24, Grand Island firefighters responded to a report of a structure fire at the Kohli residence on North Lane.
Fire Capt. Kevin Koch stated that when family members returned home from a shopping trip they found smoke in their kitchen and immediately contacted the Grand Island Fire Co for emergency assistance. When fire suppression crews arrived with engine No. 3 and ladder truck No. 6, they discovered that a fire was confined to the oven in a kitchen stove. The fire was substantially out by that time and there was no extension to the surrounding area, however.
Koch identified the source of the fire as an electrical malfunction, which caused approximately $1,500 damage.
Some ventilation of the structure was required and there were no injuries.
All GIFC units returned to service by 8:39 p.m.
