On Feb. 3, SUNY Erie Community College's dental hygiene students partnered with Dr. Marti Peterson's Just 4 Me Pediatric dental team to provide free dental care to children from Erie and Niagara counties as part of the American Dental Association-sponsored Give Kids a Smile Day at the college's north campus dental hygiene clinic.

This year, the department's faculty and senior students - who provide dental services to the community year-round - partnered with Getzville's Just 4 Me dentistry and ECC alum Peterson (Class of 1995) to provide cleanings and information about dental care to nearly 100 new patients inside the north campus facilities.

"This was a great opportunity to not only give our students an on-site learning opportunity, but also to service our surrounding communities," ECC President Jack Quinn said. "I'm proud of what this program does not only on Give Kids a Smile Day, but throughout its semester training."

The ADA's nationally recognized day is a promoted dentistry initiative to bring children into dental offices for free treatment. It has provided oral health services to more than 5 million kids since 2003. Many have never been to a dentist before.

ECC's dental hygiene students usually perform such free services for adults at the north campus clinic. Through the fall and spring semesters, students apply classroom lessons about preventive care by assisting local patients with cleanings, X-rays and cancer screenings.

If you know of anyone in need of a dental cleaning, X-rays or sealants, you can have them call ECC's dental hygiene offices at 716-851-1336 to make an appointment.

Since 1946, Erie Community College has met the needs of a diverse student body while contributing to the economic vitality of Western New York. As a member of the state's SUNY system, the three-campus college provides flexible, affordable and accessible educational programs in an accommodating academic environment. Equipped with the knowledge of these programs, ECC's faculty, staff and students strive to enrich their host communities through skill, service and partnership.
