Obituary: George Davis

Fri, Dec 23rd 2016 07:00 am

"Did you ever hear the one about ..." that was the opening for a delightful conversation with George Davis. He had a million of them. George Davis, son of late Wally and Marie Davis, and brother of the late Ronald Davis, died in his Grand Island home on Dec. 19, 2016. George was a distinctive 1955 graduate of Kenmore West High School, and participated as MC in every high school reunion. He was an extraordinary athlete - some said that he was the best running back they had ever witnessed, but he was equally good at baseball and track. He was inducted into the Kenmore West Hall of Fame in 2011.

He was an exemplary salesman and retired from Gibraltar Steele. After retiring he became a self-taught carpenter, crafting cradles, cabinets, birdhouses, and dollhouses, often designing them himself.

He was the husband of Barbara A. Davis, and the father of Lori K. Barr, Bradley (Julie) Davis, Kirk (Tracy) Davis, Craig (Sheila) Davis, and Christopher (Tracy) Davis.

He is survived by his 12 grandchildren, Lindsay and Justin (Sarah Noble) Corp; Mallory (Adrian) Bertolone; Alexandra, Elizabeth, and Genevieve Davis; Michael (Christie), Jason and Jordan Davis; and Tyler, Carly and Annabelle Davis.

He was their rock. They loved to see his pride in their every accomplishment. His absence will make their world a little less steady.

He was also blessed to have four great grandchildren, Dexter and Wes Bertolone, Eloise Davis, and Emma Corp, and also many nieces and nephews, including Scot (Denise) Davis.

His family will miss his love of music, and westerns, and his gardens, which were planned to provide a plethora of color variations. They will miss him sitting in the driveway watching the world go by and his wry observations of current events. But his words live on, in his speeches that he gave at gatherings, his jokes that his grandchildren tell to each other, his no nonsense advice and commentary, and his unexpected poetry that will be read at his funeral. All arrangements are through Kaiser Funeral home.
