For the eighth time, Buffalo State has been named to the President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll, which recognizes colleges and universities that support exemplary community service programs and effective campus community partnerships.

The President's Honor Roll is the highest federal recognition an institution can receive for its commitment to community, service-learning and civic engagement.

For the 2015 honor roll application, Buffalo State identified more than 492,000 hours of community service activities during the 2014-15 academic year by students, faculty and staff in the Western New York region. The application process was coordinated by the college's Volunteer and Service-Learning Center.

"From service-learning connections with our more than 120 community partners, to student-led alternative break service trips, to the thousands of hours of student-teaching experiences in Western New York school districts, Buffalo State students, faculty and staff have embraced our role and responsibility as SUNY's urban-engaged campus," Buffalo State President Katherine Conway-Turner said.

"Buffalo State's unique city setting - bordered by a booming arts corridor on one side of campus, and by a resurgent neighborhood buoyed by an influx of refugees from around the world on the other - provides our students with countless opportunities to not only contribute to the greater good through civic and community engagement, but to be immersed in, and learn from, a setting that already reflects the demographic and cultural changes our country will experience in the coming years," she added.

In September, Buffalo State was one of just five institutions from across the country to be presented with the Washington Center's prestigious Higher Education Civic Engagement Award. Marquette University, Purdue University, the University of North Carolina-Charlotte and the University of San Diego were among the other campuses honored during a luncheon at the National Press Club.

About the President's Community Service Honor Roll

Inspired by the thousands of college students who traveled across the country to support relief efforts along the Gulf Coast after Hurricane Katrina, the honor roll highlights the role colleges and universities play in solving community challenges. Since 2006, the Corporation for National and Community Service has overseen the award in collaboration with the U.S. departments of Education and Housing and Urban Development, as well as the American Council on Education, Campus Compact and the Interfaith Youth Core.
